raw images?
Do you have to shoot with RAW image to use the overlay feature.
What is RAW?
On my Lense there is an 'M' (& a) 'A' Is that for my manual and automatic focusing?
How often do u need to clean the lenses and I read you should use a 'blower' ???
What is the proper setting for children running around..for focus, lighting etc..? nikon d40

I use a Canon so I don't know if you need to be in RAW to use the overlay feature.
Shooting in RAW basically means that the camera does not do anything to the data ie. converting the file to jpeg. If you plan on doing any editing you should always shoot in raw and convert to TIFF. Jpeg is a lossy format which means that when the file is compressed data is lost. The more you edit and save the file the more info is lost. Tiff is a non lossy format the files are not compressed like Jpeg and there is no data loss. The downside to shooting in raw though is that the files are much larger.

You should clean the lens with a blower often. You want to make sure there is no dust on it. When not using the camera always keep the lens cap on.
To shoot children running around use the fastest shutter speed you can in the lighting that you have available. In order to freeze action you need a fast shutter speed say 1/250th of a second or more or you images will be blurry. This should not be a problem outside on a sunny day. Typically I would say use ISO 400. In low light without flash open your apeture as wide as you can and choosa a higher ISO. This will get you higher shutter speed but a more grainy look. You will have to practice to figure this out.
Remember that you can't hold the camera steady enough below 1/60th of a second shutter speed to get a clear image.
